As per a recent post on Business Week, Super Bowl fans are now using Twitter along with the Super Bowl running on TV to create a true “two screen” experience.

What I also find amazing is how Steve Jobs of memory was able to identify what users wanted before they did. When the iPad came out as a Tablet computing device, many did not see the practical value of it and started making feminine jokes about the name. Not only that, but there was no keyboard or stylus, which was heavily criticized by limited thinkers. Now it’s one of the hottest selling items in the market today with many imitators.

Multi-location sites are becoming more popular every day. As some businesses wish to branch out to different locations, such as colleges and universities, having a unique web presence for each location is essential. Here are some ways to make each location search engine optimization-friendly.

Subdomains for Each Location

Let’s say that site has 2 locations, one in Northern Toronto and one in Southern Toronto. For the purposes of separation, having subdomains for a site like “northern-toronto.somesite.com” or “school-of-arts.somecollege.com” allows for a separation and helps enable the capacity for cross-linking. A link like “http://www.somewebsite.com/career/?section=Accounting_Payroll_Administrator” on the other hand looks cumbersome and needs updating.

Focus on each locations’ area of concentration

If the location focuses on arts, don’t write about “science and technology” unless an arts-related page is referencing a line from a “science and technology” sub-site. For example, a business school should focus on business and not history, for example.

Make the content relevant

Nobody likes reading the same content over and over again, especially when it doesn’t make sense for a specific location. For that matter, neither does Google. If you do a subdomain like “waterfront.somesite.com” write about topics relevant to Waterfront.

Linking

Linking is important as Google values another website’s input on how great your site is, versus your own site’s input about itself. This especially applies when the anchor tag has SEO friendly text. One example would be “Tires in Toronto” with a link to a page that talks about places where to find tires in toronto.

Inbound and Outbound Links

Linking, linking, linking. Google loves it when there is a mix of inbound and outbound links. It values a website that doesn’t only reference itself in as many places as possible, but also gives credit to other websites and micro-sites.

Which leads us to internal linking.

Internal linking

Here, where ever you can reference a subdomain of a different topic or city, do so even though it now counts as internal links. Source: Google Webmaster blog.

Plenty of Pages

Content to this day is still king. While the minimum number of pages is arbitrary, one thing is clear: a 5 page website “won’t do.”

SEO-Friendly URLs

Having SEO-friendly URLs are crucial. You want the SEO friendly term to be placed on the URL.

Here are some SEO friendly URLs with keywords that might be used in a Cars directory, example:

Accounting & Payroll Administrator Course: accounting-payroll-administrator.yourwebsite.com

Early Childhood Assistant Program: early-childhood-assistant.yourwebsite.com

Law Clerk Diploma Program: law-clerk-diploma.yourwebsite.com/used-cars

Paralegal Diploma Program: paralegal-diploma.yourwebsite.com

Technology School Courses: technology-school-courses.yourwebsite.com

E-Commerce Web Designer Program: ecommerce-web-designer.yourwebsite.com

Dental Assistant Course: dental-assistant-program.yourwebsite.com

SEO Foundations

The following was taken from “6 Tips on How to SEO a Directory:”

Strong SEO Foundations should ideally be placed on any site, let alone an online directory, when starting out. Here are what needs to be done to start out.

Google and Bing Webmaster Tools

Webmaster tools not only provide insights on how clean and searchable your website is, but it also tells the search engines that “this site is ready for indexing.” There you would also submit your XML sitemap.

XML, HTML sitemaps and Robots File

An XML sitemap is very important for indexing. Essentially “robot food,” it allows Google and Bing to reference a point where to index as many pages as possible, especially ones that you don’t necessarily want shown on the home page.

An HTML sitemap is important from an overall navigation point of view, allowing one to navigate through all pages on a site. If there are already many pages to index, try creating separate pages of 100 page links each.

The Robots file is important in that it tells search engines to either not index pages within a directory or to specifically index pages, and for which users. Since it’s generally the first page that is checked, create one.

Places for Meta Tagging Insertion

This should be obvious. Proper title and meta tags cannot be inserted without places to insert them.

Easy-to-navigate Links

Try to make your site as link-friendly as possible. This especially applies to pages where you want people to navigate to.

Google Analytics

It’s not proven, but it’s believed that anything that can connect to Google helps with Google indexing. There are paid Analytics tools out there, but Google Analytics is free! So, add it.

Pinging

When you “ping” your site to various sources including Google, it tells them to automatically re-index your site based on your updated sitemap.

A day later, Ted Williams was hired by CBS News, got a haircut and went into drug Rehab.

Now “the man with the golden voice” has a much different look. He now has a clean haircut, glasses, is no longer wearing a camouflage jacket and is living in a house.

Williams rose to fame after the Columbus Dispatch newspaper posted a video that was taken by a certain Doral Chenoweth. Williams was standing at the side of a road with a sign that read, “I have a God given gift of voice.” Curious, Chenoweth asked Williams to say something, saying “I’m going to make you work for your dollar,” and the video took off.

The TV show Entertainment Tonight also met up with Williams as he celebrated a year after his video went viral.

Ted Williams, Man With Golden Voice Runs into Initial Trouble

“A year ago today I was living in tents under bridges, smoking crack, doing all the wild things,” he said in the video. Now he has a fireplace, a flat-screen TV and a walk-in closet that doubles as a recording studio.

“What a difference a year makes,” he said as he admits to not being able to dream of living in a spacious home more than a year ago. “It’s a hallelujah moment every day I wake up.”

However, it has not been an easy year for Williams as he became famous.

Shortly after the video went viral, the Dispatch was hit with calls and emails offering Williams job offers. The Cleveland Cavaliers offered him a full-time job doing “voice-over” work and even offered to pay the mortgage on a home. He had also made appearances on national morning shows, which included one where he reunited with his mother.

But, the quick fame turned out to be too much for Williams to handle. Less than a week after the video went viral, he was placed under arrest by police in Hollywood after being involved in a verbal argument with his daughter in a hotel room. They were staying at the hotel prior to an appearance on the Dr. Phil show. Williams had reunited with his ex-wife and five of his nine children on the show. One day later, the Dr. Phil show announced Williams was heading to rehab.

“(Williams) agreed to go to a private facility following a lengthy one-on-one conversation with Dr. Phil,” read a statement issued by the show.
“I’ve told him it’s not going to be easy and it’s going to take a lot of hard work,” said Dr. Phil in the statement in an Access Hollywood article. “It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction.”

In the twenty years prior to becoming an overnight Internet sensation, Williams had been charged with robbery, escape, forgery and drug possession.
Today, both Chenoweth and ET report Williams is sober and doing much better.

His book, titled “A Golden Voice: How faith, hard work and humility brought me from the streets to salvation,” is set to be released in May.

Original Video

However, when you submit to an article directory, you are basically at the mercy of the webmaster. The only way to ensure that you are never rejected for an article ever again is to make your own directories. As the saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself.

However, creating a directory worth posting on is only part of the battle. Experience has taught us that "if you build it, they will come" does not apply with websites. Additional work needs to be done, especially in being "found" by search engines like Google and Bing. If your directory is easily seen on these search engines, it gives the article directory enough "SEO value" to link to other websites.

However, when you submit to an article directory, you are basically at the mercy of the webmaster. The only way to ensure that you are never rejected for an article ever again is to make your own directories. As the saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself.

However, creating a directory worth posting on is only part of the battle. Experience has taught us that “if you build it, they will come” does not apply with websites. Additional work needs to be done, especially in being “found” by search engines like Google and Bing. If your directory is easily seen on these search engines, it gives the article directory enough “SEO value” to link to other websites.

So, how does one properly go about this? Here are some tips:

1. Strong SEO Foundations

2. Lots of Preliminary Content

There are two reasons for this. One, people that are told they will be placed on a directory want to “feel” like the directory has meat. Two, search engines like to see a website with content versus one without.

3. Linking

Linking is important as Google values another website’s input on how great your site is, versus your own site’s input about itself. This especially applies when the anchor tag has SEO friendly text. One example would be “Tires in Toronto” with a link to a page that talks about places where to find tires in toronto.

Cross-linking

Search engines like it when websites of a similar theme cross-link each other. For example, a cars directory page that has a term “motorcycles for sale” should link there.

Inbound and Outbound Links

Search engines value a website that doesn’t only reference itself in as many places as possible, but also gives credit to other websites.

4. Proper header and subheader tags

It’s important to have SEO friendly text in the header and subheader tags of a website. This not only improves readability, but also shows search engines the prominence of a specific term.

5. Meta Content

Proper meta content is also important as Google looks at the keywords there first before deciding what to index. Besides keyword and description tags, it helps if there are the following tags: Author, Copyright, Language, Distribution, Rating, GoogleBot, Revisit-After, Key_Phrase, Expires, Classification, ObjectType, and Publisher. Also, adding Facebook social-graph tags help as Facebook is quickly turning into a “social search engine,” but that’s a whole other discussion.

6. SEO Friendly URLs

Having SEO-friendly URLs are crucial. You want the SEO friendly term to be placed on the URL.

Here are some SEO friendly URLs with keywords that might be used in a Cars directory, example:

Car Repair: www.yourwebsite.com/car-repair

Car Mechanics: www.yourwebsite.com/car-mechanics

Used Cars: www.yourwebsite.com/used-cars

Tires: www.yourwebsite.com/tires

Rims: www.yourwebsite.com/rims

Used Auto Parts: www.yourwebsite.com/used-auto-parts
